Five villa designs,

Market Stalls

Market Stalls

Space for Kendwa's makers, growers and food producers to showcase their talents at Liyongo.

Sustainability

What we build today, Zanzibar inherits tomorrow

The environmental decisions at Liyongo were made at design stage rather than added afterwards. The commitments to Kendwa were made with the village itself.

Built for shade and airflow

Courtyards, deep verandas and orientation do the cooling work that would otherwise fall to machinery.

Materials from the island

Coral stone and makuti, cut and worked locally by people who have used them here for generations.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainfall is collected and stored for use across Liyongo.

Local work and training

Construction and the running of Liyongo draw on Zanzibari labour and suppliers, with a community centre and local staff initiatives.

A market for Kendwa's makers

Regular on-site market stalls and exhibition space to give local traders, performers and craftspeople a place to showcase their gifts at Liyongo.

Water and schools

A partnership with Kendwa's village leadership covers a fresh-water well for local residents and equipment for the schools.
