Kendwa, Zanzibar

Time moves differently here

Kendwa sits on Zanzibar's north-west shore, where the sun sets over the water. Beach bars line the sand; dive boats and dhows cross the bay through the day, while village life continues inland.

Liyongo is set among trees on higher ground, within Kendwa itself and a short walk from the beach.

Swimmable through the tide cycle

Along much of Zanzibar, low tide pulls the sea far from shore. Kendwa is one of the few beaches where the water remains swimmable throughout the tide cycle.

Boats move across the bay through the day; by evening, the beach bars fill as the sun sets over the water. Liyongo sits a short walk away on higher ground.

Nungwi, day and night

Nungwi is one of Zanzibar's liveliest destinations, with restaurants, beach bars, dive centres and shops active into the evening. It also has pharmacies, ATMs and medical services for the practicalities of a longer stay.

Travel Guide

The island beyond Kendwa

Stone Town

An hour south of Kendwa, Stone Town has carved doors, narrow lanes and an Indian Ocean waterfront shaped by centuries of trade between East Africa, Arabia and India.

The spice farms

Cloves, cinnamon and tropical fruit grow across the centre of the island, along the road between Kendwa and Stone Town.

Zanzibar from the water

Dive sites, reef trips and sailing take you from the clear water of the north to the sandbanks beyond Stone Town.
