Sustainability

What we build today, Zanzibar inherits tomorrow

The environmental decisions at Liyongo were made at design stage rather than added afterwards. The commitments to Kendwa were made with the village itself.

Built for shade and airflow

Courtyards, deep verandas and orientation do the cooling work that would otherwise fall to machinery.

Materials from the island

Coral stone and makuti, cut and worked locally by people who have used them here for generations.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainfall is collected and stored for use across Liyongo.

Local work and training

Construction and the running of Liyongo draw on Zanzibari labour and suppliers, with a training centre preparing local residents for roles in the operation.

A market for Kendwa's makers

Regular on-site markets and the artisan village give local traders, farmers and craftspeople a place to sell at Liyongo.

Water and schools

A partnership with Kendwa's village leadership covers a fresh-water well for local residents and equipment for the schools.

Furniture

Furnished for the tropics

Jumba is not grand because it is large. It is grand because it is made for gathering: family, friends and the stories they bring with them. Jumba is furnished in a tropical style chosen to last in this climate, to be comfortable to stay in and to appeal to guests year after year.

  • An interior designed for each villa type
  • Materials and finishes selected for salt air and humidity
  • Furniture, fittings and equipment are included in the price
  • Images are indicative; final selections may vary
